The program not only allows the client to recognize potential problems, it also allows the investigation of suggested solutions and the execution of parameter studies, which can predict and compare the results of targeted changes. In principle, every single geometric and physical unit can be represented and recorded continually. To give an example, the following graph shows the angular velocity of a switch contact as a function of time. You can see the dynamic release of the switch contact and also how the motion is absorbed by a strong spring (see also the following film).

ABB CMC in Schaffhausen, Switzerland

ABB CMC in Schaffhausen makes, among other things, high-performance electronic switches for use in the areas of machine engineering and instrument and building technology. Researchers have a problem though: the switching process takes place in about 10 milliseconds and can't be seen with the naked eye. Up until now, a high-speed camera has been the only way to analyze the movement exactly. The use of this tool is not cheap though and also has its limits. Looking in every corner of an originally closed casing of a switch is difficult.

L &G Software developed a model of a switch being developed by ABB CMC and the company used it to analyze the movement and to investigate certain problems. With the model that L&G Software set up, the customer is now able to make changes to the model and carry out simulations himself, without having to know the software in detail .

What the example shows:

1. Physical simulations are a type of "virtual high-speed camera". The difference is, you can examine and measure out machines that only exist in the mind of the developer, not just machines that have already been built.

2. Procedures that take place very quickly in reality can be slowed down and observed at whatever speed you like with simulations.

AVI movie (1.5 MB) -> Windows Media Player

R ecording a film is also very helpful for problems of this kind. The software allows the recording and playing of so-called QuickTime movies in any resolution in terms of time or space. Oscillations and vibrations can be examined down to the micro or nanosecond .
